Our beach wedding in Cabo San Lucas is only 52 days away! I can’t believe it is so close. I wanted to share some smart beauty routine and lifestyle choices I have made as we get closer to our big day.
*Please keep in mind everyone has different needs when it comes to a beauty regimen, and this is just my personal advice. I would love to hear what works for you personally in the comments below!
If you are not already exercising regularly, before your wedding is the perfect time to find an activity you love and make it a healthy lifestyle change, even after your wedding. Carve out time for yourself everyday. I promise the rest of the world will go on without you for an hour – you deserve it! Get your dog involved or pair up with a friend to make it fun.
Do not be afraid of weight lifting. Your body burns more calories on its own when you have more muscle. Don’t focus on skinny – focus on toned.
Here are some of my favorites:
- Insanity (You can do this in the privacy of your own home, regardless of the weather. I dropped 15 pounds doing this program!)
- Sprint Intervals
- Jogging with my dog
Water & Diet
Drinks loads of distilled water. Aim for a gallon a day to help with glowing skin, a toned body, and a level head. Nothing is worse than a dehydration headache.
I have incorporated substantially more fruits and veggies into my daily diet and lost 7 pounds in about a week! I have found the easiest way to do this was to invest in a Vitamix and spiralizer. I replaced my usual egg and cheese whole wheat English muffin with a large fruit and veggie smoothie made with unsweetened coconut almond milk. I replaced pasta with zucchini noodles and added a large kale and herb salad to lunch and dinner. One of my new favorite meals for breakfast is Feta Avocado Toast. It takes mere minutes to put together and keeps me full for hours while providing healthy fats and filling fiber. I pair this with a green smoothie and mint green tea. I am eating way more than usual but am dropping pounds. I drink several organic teas a day – mint green as well as dandelion root which is a great diuretic. I have made a conscious effort to buy organic fruits and vegetables, especially those that I will be eating with the skin on, such as apples and tomatoes.
Leave. Them. Alone.
The months before your wedding are not the time to suddenly decide you are going to thin them out, or copy the look of your favorite celebrity. Your brows frame your face, and can make or break your look. Take care of the easy-to-maintain bits of fuzz between your brows and the obvious stragglers on your brow bone but don’t mess with the actual shape. Let them grow in a little and then have them professionally threaded a week or so before your big day. Threading seems to give the best look without the risk of pesky ingrown hairs or bumps. There is also no risk of wax burn.
Step away from the hair straightener. I can honestly say it has been close to 2 years since I let one of those things near my hair. That steam you see rising from the iron? That fried chicken smell? That is your hair frying! And all the gunk you put on to “protect” your hair is pretty much cooking onto your strands, leading you with tons of build-up, which causes lifeless, lackluster locks.
If you are growing out your hair, realize that consistently chopping off the ends every few weeks is going to stunt your growth. Treating your hair well is a much better alternative to torturing your mane and then chopping off the damage.
Once a week, I use a clarifying shampoo to help deeply cleanse and remove toxins from my scalp. I am left with a head of HUGE shiny hair. These are my favorites, which also happen to be inexpensive drug store purchases.
Think about all of your skin, not just on your face. One of my new favorite drug store beauty steals is from Jergens. It is a BB cream, but for your body! Apply this after your shower and say goodbye to uneven skin tone. I saw great results after about a week.
I incorporate one of two face masks into my routine, usually on Sunday nights after I shower. I usually rotate every other week. Glam Glow Mud Mask (see my review here) is like a vacuum for any impurity in your skin. It works right before your eyes and leaves your skin feeling amazing. It is worth every penny.
I also love Sudden Change Green Tea Facial Mask. Shahs of Sunset star Lilly Ghalichi suggested this drugstore mask in one of her blog posts. Considering Lilly is a substantially wealthy women and she swears by this mask found at CVS, it is good enough for me!
In the shower I use Murad facial cleanser. My skin never feels tight after use as it is the perfect blend of deep cleaning and moisturizing. I apply it with my Clarasonic brush every day for an extra-tingly clean. The Clarasonic helps remove built up makeup and dead skin to leave your face silky soft.
I. Am. Obsessed! With all of my acne problems during my teen years, I never thought I would be slathering oil on my face every night. I have been using this from head to toe and it has actually replaced many of my other beauty products. Here are some of my favorite uses:
- facial moisturizer after my shower (has also helped eyelash and eyebrow breakage)
- body moisturizer after my shower
- hair mask (put on, wrap your hair in a towel, then shampoo after it soaks in for awhile – maybe while you do your nails!)
- cuticle oil
- waterproof makeup remover
I plan on trying the new oil pulling trend using organic coconut oil. More of that to come.
Several of my friends have gorgeous natural nails that seemed to have sprouted up overnight. I asked what their secret is and they all said the same thing – prenatal vitamins! Whether you are trying to get pregnant or not, these vitamins do wonders for your skin, hair and nails. My nails have never been stronger since I started using them. I personally like Organic Full Circle Prenatal Vitamins. Be forewarned that you really need to take these with food, otherwise you may get sick.
Go easy on your nails in the coming months before your wedding. Avoid dark black, blue and glitter-laden polishes as they tend to stain and are hard to get off. You want your nails in tip-top shape for all those fabulous ring photos you have saved on Pinterest.
A special note on cuticles. NEVER cut them! That cuticle cutter should only be used on hang nails. Cutting cuticles makes them grow back fast and thick, leading to more hangnails. Invest in some good cuticle oil, and make it your new best friend. Slip some on before bed and rub into your nail and surrounding area. Your cuticles will thank you.
Always file in one direction. When you file away, sawing back and forth, you create tiny frays in the tip of your nail. These can catch on something or become very prone to peeling. Use the extra patience to file correctly.
I personally have found that a rounded tip seems to be my strongest look. With rounded edges, you are less likely to snag a blunt corner (of a square nail) on fabric which results in pulling and nail breakage.
I also swear by Essie or OPI Ridge Filler as a base coat for my manicures. Applying one of these products first will provide a smooth base for your polish. Your manicure will last longer and be less prone to chipping and in return less prone to peeling.
Your smile will be front and center on your big day! Start making healthy choices that will become smart habits even after you say “I do!”
Go easy on the coffee and red wine as they both cause staining. Now would be a good time to switch to mint green tea for your little caffeine kick. The mint freshens your breath. Green tea has so many other health benefits for your glowing skin and offers detox benefits for your digestion.
Floss daily (hopefully this is already part of your daily regimen!) I started using an electric toothbrush and my mouth has never felt healthier!
You may choose to whiten your teeth as well. I have had fabulous results with Crest Whitestrips, but my teeth get super sensitive. I would love to hear what you have used that works.
