It’s kind of been awhile since I revisited my word for 2017 from this post. One of the goals I made in focusing on “less” was less chemicals and crap. While I know I won’t ever be perfect in this department, transitioning to more eco friendly living has helped me feel good about my choices as a mom and human in general.
A fellow blogger mentioned the Think Dirty app and it was a huge eye opener. Using the app, I simply scan the barcode of a household cleaner and Think Dirty gives me a rating. The app tells me how “dirty” the substance is and even goes a step further to suggest cleaner alternatives. The ratings of many of my daily use items were appalling! I will go into more detail in some dedicated blog posts, but I did a lot of research for transitioning to more eco friendly living in this category. I want to kill germs but not expose my family to unnecessary toxins if there are other options (and there are!)
Playthings for the Kids
How many things pass through my kids’ mouths in a given day amazes me. I’ve never been super hung up on germs (#boymomlife) but it is downright terrifying when you really think about it. Wyatt is just starting to reduce the amount of grime he puts in his mouth on a daily basis. But baby brother Lincoln is right behind to pick up where he leaves off.
I was thrilled when I discovered Finn + Emma’s organic baby products, specifically, their woodland play gyms. You know I love the natural wood aspects of our house, and these toys are just beautiful statement pieces for any nursery or playroom. Way more importantly, they are eco-friendly and made with non-toxic dyes. The lacquer and stain that Finn + Emma uses is lead, phthalate, mercury, nickel and VOC’s-free. Their playgyms feature sweet little wood dolls made from indian hardwood finished with vegetable seed wax. The 100% G.O.T.S. certified knit dolls are fair-trade and hand-knit by artisans in Peru, made with organic cotton and stuffed with 100% sheep’s wool.
Functionality is also super important to me as a mom. Investing in playthings for the kids that will last, that can grow with them, and that have multiple uses justifies spending a little extra for high quality. Finn + Emma’s playgym buddies are completely interchangeable. I’ve attached them to Lincoln’s carseat handle on walks or in the car. Even big brother Wyatt has enjoyed them while waiting at restaurants.
Finn + Emma has helped make transitioning to more eco friendly living that much easier with their organic, fair trade baby items.
Food + Chemicals
I probably do the best in this category. One rule I swear by is using the Dirty Dozen and Clean 15 when purchasing produce. Full post coming this week!
Beauty + Personal Care Products
I admit, I am by no means perfect in this category. Remember, I am embracing less, not perfection. I love my mani/pedis and getting my hair done. And when I fall in love with a mascara that is IT! BUT, I have been much more conscientious about what goes on our bodies, especially as a breastfeeding mom. The biggest change I made so far is in baby care products for the boys and skincare for me. Little by little I’ve been replacing my own skincare with organic, less toxic products as well. What is allowed in things we put on our skin, which is our biggest organ, astounds me! A few eco friendly skincare and beauty lines have really interested me, and will be sharing more in other posts once I give them some time on my skin.
One goal I have this spring while transitioning to more eco friendly living is to learn more about composting. This process has interested me for many years, but I have yet to fully commit to it. This is going to be the year!
